and that, ladies and gentlemen, is what an English major spends her hard-earned money on.

A certain atmosphere of breathless and unexplainable dread of outer, unknown forces must be present; and there must be a hint, expressed with seriousness and portentousness becoming its subject, of that most terrible conception of the human brain— a malign and particular suspension or defeat of those fixed laws of Nature which are our only safeguard against the assaults of chaos and the daemons of unplumbed space.”

- H.P.

This post from io9 editor Annalee Newitz presents the rare opportunity to post something that addresses all three of my Simsian Review themes. In it, she presents episodes in three recent, major geek cons where gender disparities in publishing, atheism, and hacking (respectively) were on display.

Sexism in geek culture presents an interesting challenge. Somehow, geeks have made headway in moving from a denigrated position to one of power quite easily, at least compared to attempts to undermine male hegemony and obstinacy in any number of fields. Among geeks, I often find myself having to point out inappropriate comments or actions but I notice less resistance than with non-geeks. Of course, this amounts to anecdotal, and thus useless, evidence. Still, sexism among geeks is shocking in a way that it is not among business entrepreneurs. Perhaps this is just cognitive bias, as I obviously fit more easily into the former camp rather than the latter. History is replete with disadvantaged groups simultaneously seeking equality and instances of groups fighting each other as they also fight against existing power are always discouraging. I am thinking primarily of disparate worker rights groups fighting each other at the same time that they fight for extended rights and abolitionists and suffragettes at odd with one another. This is hardly the topic being addressed by Ms. Newitz, but I can’t help but feel disheartened when I see a group left out of the progress of a larger set to which they belong.

All of that said, please click-through and read.

My grandfather built them a long time ago, right after I graduated from high school. It was a rough time for all of us, so if anything at all, it was a kind of therapy for him. A cathartic experience. I suppose he intended they be a sort of gift, though even after I flew, I never understood their significance. I mean, I understood the concrete significance: who doesn’t want to traverse the sky every night? My grandfather harnessed the power of the moon; he was dragging into very reality the dreams of scientists and romantics alike. I understood all of that. But I didn’t understand the metaphorical significance. We forget that life is all about metaphors. We think that they’re just literary devices, but, as with most things, we’re wrong.

Marlena! he’d say, and I could hear the winding of his wrench around a bolt or the thud of a hammer against metal, you’re going to be my little winged guinea pig, sugar! I hoped to God that he’d taken the proper precautions. He didn’t quite prioritize safety at that point in his life.

Grandpa always had a glass of milk next to a glass of brandy next to his reams and reams of diagrams and rubber-banded, rolled-up blueprints, next to his stubby little arms that were covered in white hairs like the tails of ghosts. I never knew which glass he’d drink first. I’d leave for class in the morning, from our tiny house in Presque Isle, and I’d return to his studio before dinnertime, and both glasses would be empty. More often than not, he’d have fallen asleep with a pencil and compass, or a ruler, or a hex key, gently resting inside of his grip. His little, snoring frame would be slumped over a towering pile of photographs depicting the wings of airplanes, of birds, of butterflies and bats, or, sometimes, the fins of giant, sea-dwelling fish and mythological creatures the likes of which might haunt another man’s, a lesser man’s, dreams.
